YACHT NEW BUILDING AND REFIT PROJECTS
The building of a new yacht is a dream for many owners. The advantages are that you can decide on every aspect of your new yacht: design, size, price, materials and more. To start with, one should realize that a yacht is a machine that contains many aspects when it comes to seaworthiness, complex machinery, engineering, styling and comfort. Preliminary decisions before contacting a professional should be taken:
With this information your project manager or advisor can start prospecting the market of yacht architects, builders and suppliers to realize a preliminary estimate. One should know that most architects and shipyard are usually specialised in certain types of yachts. The choice is too large to combine all types into one architect or shipyard. Quality is a main factor that determines the final price, a Dutch built yacht for example is more expensive then a yacht build in a low labour cost country.
The advantages of a quality yacht:
However, some yards, managers and architects work together with low labour cost countries to build yachts. Usually they use these countries for only part of the building. For example making the hull and superstructure, and the engine installations. The final finish is then done at a quality yard elsewhere. It isn't said that low labour countries deliver bad products, but one can doubt the stability of the quality, unless non stop supervised by the manager and/or architect, one can avoid problems that are usually more expensive then the managers fee. A quality yacht can be build in a low cost country by means of supervision and import of quality products and or services. Many well known interior builders, electricians and other quality suppliers travel worldwide to install their products themselves. Once you have decided the type of yacht, your designer/architect/ and manager, The decisions on design, installations, and price can be taken. Then quotations/estimates can be obtained from the different builders. It is crucial to know that your decisions must be as precise as possible. Modifications that are demanded after the building has started are usually very expensive. Cases are known of a more then 50% increase in price just because of unforeseen modifications. And as you have paid part of the project at the start, it is difficult to discuss these issues afterwards, and many owners ended up in an endless court case, without there yacht available in time. It can turn the dream into a (costly) nightmare. For more information and or advise on new building a yacht, please contact us any time.
A delicate subject...Why would someone restore a yacht? Many reasons are possible: The historic value of a yacht, Its sentimental value, or just because one falls in love with it. Whatever the reason, it is almost always a feeling. As with new building (I advice to read the new building as well), one must choose a professional to guide you through the process. The difference is that your manager should be earlier involved before taking decisions of buying. Restoring is a very specialised profession, maybe even more than new building.
Before buying a restoration project, take this in consideration:
The traps are almost always the "unforeseen" items. What is often underestimated is the ripping down before building and the hidden defaults that can not be seen before dismantling. For these items a budget must be set aside. A detailed list of work to be carried out should be made. Listed in categories for all different suppliers. Once established the work to be done, a yard and or suppliers can be contacted to collect estimates. However, as for the new building, modifications after the work started should be avoided. Modernise or personalise a yacht. For years you own your yacht, or you just bought one that needs some updating. Even for these updates, a manager or professional who guides you is worth the investment. Many reasons of updating are possible:
It is highly preferred to update your yacht in one go. It is easy to understand that each time the yacht has to go to the yard it costs money. Each time things are dismantled as well. Often different work can be combined. Try to make an update list, and set the money apart for it. It can save lots of money. Most yacht owners just contact a shipyard and order what they like to have. However, many yards do not inform their clients of all the possibilities on the market. This is usually because the shipyard is attached to its suppliers, and prefers to sell something on which they're profit margin is the highest. Today all integrated navigation systems are available, however, one must know how to install them. And also how to use them. Many owners are left in nature with the manuals, and are not properly instructed on how to use the new system. And who wants to read manuals while enjoying the sea?? Choose a electronics professional who will and can guide you through the new system. Choose the right engines: Another head breaker, there are so many engine manufacturers. If you were happy with your old brand, and especially its dealer and aftersale, do not change!! Good advise is crucial, for example: a yacht that cruises mainly low speed, should not have high revolution engines. These engines will in time break down on internal fouling of the turbos and or valves. Many paint systems are available, they are all good they say.........but, it all depends the painter...no guarantee if not well applied. Some more experienced yacht owners will recognise these lines, and how costly it turned out. Bigger modifications often need more then one supplier. For a bowthruster for example, one needs a supplier to fit the tube in the hull, that can be made of fibreglass, wood, aluminium or steel. An electrician to fit extra batteries, charge cables, power cables and control cables, a mecanic to install the motor and drive into the tube, and sometimes a carpenter to fit the control handles. A set of different professions on one item...Choose the right ones!
